Hurricane Irene brought mayhem to Carolina Beach, but she also brought along big waves for area surfers. High winds and rain eventually gave into the struggling sunshine and generated the elusive East Coast big wave day. Local Surfers made the most of it, and were seen shredding and gliding across what Irene had churned up for most of the day.
Although a few die hards were out on Friday, yelling “yippee ki yay” and getting tossed about in heavy seas, the best waves of the weekend were generated on Saturday. Irene left town as islanders picked up the pieces. While surfers from up and down the Carolina Coast picked up their boards and headed to Carolina Beach and Kure Beach.
